Waste management in South Africa: a challenge and an opportunity
Waste management in South Africa poses a major challenge, but it also presents a significant opportunity for the circular economy and sustainable development. Each year, the country generates between 108 and 122 million tons of waste, with 79% ending up in landfills due to insufficient treatment infrastructure. Despite government commitments to reduce landfill waste to 40% by 2025, the recycling rate remains low, particularly for hazardous waste, which is currently at just 6.6%.
The informal sector, comprising nearly 90,000 waste collectors, plays a crucial role in waste recovery, reclaiming 90% of recyclable materials and generating significant cost savings for municipalities. However, these workers often operate under precarious conditions, with limited recognition and support.
Amid these challenges, new opportunities are emerging:
- Extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs, shifting waste management accountability to manufacturers.
- Mining waste recovery, leveraging industrial byproducts for reuse.
- Business-led circular economy initiatives, driving sustainable innovation.
To achieve a more sustainable future, investment in infrastructure and greater recognition of the informal sector are essential steps forward.
